Takeup of .mobi in Ireland Low

dotmobi logo Although the .mobi TLD is run by an Irish company the takeup of the new TLD among Irish users seems to be quite low. According to the latest statistics from WhoisIreland:
The uptake of the new .mobi extension has been relatively poor in Ireland. Currently there are only 136 .mobi domains on Irish hosters. The main factor in this slow uptake is the higher cost of .mobi domains. This seems to have deterred much of the speculation that dogged .eu ccTLD in the landrush period.
One of the other issues with .mobi could be related to practical usage. A lot of companies have done little to embrace mobile device support, so an actual TLD aimed at such users may have an uphill battle.

Surprising as it may sound, this is quite a positive development for .mobi because it forces natural growth. The .eu ccTLD was incompetently managed. It was completely squatted and speculated due to the sheer stupidity of EURid management in coping with the reality of the modern domain business. I think that .mobi will develop slowly but it may end up being a significant player in the domain business because it is completely different to .com and other tlds because it is specificically targeted at devices.

I'd tend to agree with you, though it would be nice if there was a greater takeup in .mobi

I agree aswell and see this as being positive. I would much rather it have a slow start with fewer domainers involved and more developers. If there are less .mobi domains being parked and more being developed then that is awesome. Mobi is definitely picking up

.mobi may be slow taking off in Ireland, but they have about 500,000 domain registrations worldwide ... not bad considering their sunrise period only ended in September.

I actually work for an Irish based company who partners with Hostway UK to resell .mobi domains (www.zinadoo.com), we’re selling .mobi domains worldwide and we've found take up to be quite good. We also offer a free and simple site building tool, host the site for free and give users a free zinadoo.mobi domain.

We've found that with a lot of our business users that the progression from having a Zinadoo.mobi domain extension to their own unique .mobi domain is natural.

I hope to do a follow up on this soon to see how things have changed.
